CUMUL: cumulative effects of energy and road infrastructures on bat and bird habitat use
The CUMUL project combines ecology and acoustics and aims to develop a tool for simulating major impacts in regulatory studies. The aim is to characterize and quantify, for the first time, the cumulative effects of renewable energy and road infrastructure on bats and birds, to test the effects of the sound generated by these infrastructures on these taxa, and to produce a tool for stakeholders to predict these effects, taking into account other important aspects of regulatory studies such as urban and landscape planning (e.g. distance to historic buildings). This tool will therefore allow impacts to be centralized to assess the overall issues associated with a development project. The aim of this tool is to provide an initial basis that can be developed by incorporating new knowledge about the issues at stake in this project, as well as new aspects that are crucial to the choice of where to locate renewable energy sources. In addition, the CUMUL project aims to involve the stakeholders (environmental consultancies, photovoltaic and wind energy industries, regulatory authorities and all potential users) as early as possible in the project so as to influence practices as smoothly and relevantly as possible through the co-construction of knowledge, tools and acceptable and operational solutions. The CUMUL project is unique in that it has been designed to ensure that the research results are as operational as possible by (i) developing an easy-to-use tool, (ii) involving key stakeholders and (iii) providing methodological keys for assessing these cumulative effects in impact assessments.
