Renaturing to regenerate urban transport infrastructure : conceptual approach
The TransNat research project explores the idea of “renaturing” on a territorial scale, and the way this concept supports the transformation processes of transport infrastructures.
At the interface of many fields (geography, social sciences, soil sciences, ecology, urban planning), the project is coordinated by Lab'Urba (Université Gustave Eiffel). Two other research teams from Gustave Eiffel University (Laboratoire Ville Mobilité Transport and Géotechnique, Environnement, Risques naturels et Sciences de la Terre department) are involved. Also, the Observatoire de la Condition Suburbaine (ENSA Paris-Est research team), the Chaire Transition Foncière (ENSA Paris-Est and EIVP), the local authority Est Ensemble Grand Paris, and the Institut d’écologie et des sciences de l’environnement (iEES).
This project analyses questions related to transport infrastructure regeneration in urban areas, by considering soil renaturation on a territorial scale. A case study on Est Ensemble territory is considered. It questions the use and the implementation of “renaturation” and “green infrastructure” principles by using a methodological approach combining qualitative survey, laboratory work, and prospective design. (i) Firstly, we will analyze the changes among planners’ models and concepts, at the intersection of “gray” and “green” infrastructures, and the territorial (spatial and governance) issues. (ii) Secondly, we will focus on the practical possibilities for transforming transport infrastructures on case studies, towards soil refunctionalization and development of ecological continuities. (iii) Finally, the project will explore prospective approaches to address the future uses – human and non-human biodiversity – of these transformed infrastructures .
The TransNat project duration is 36 months, and will contribute to scientific knowledge production, and knowledge transfer for decisions makers and designers, aiming to enlighten public policies on renaturation.
