Innovation method for studying the functionality of wildlife crossings in linear infrastructures: air DNA
Le projet exploratoire Mammif’air a pour objectif de développer une méthode innovante pour étudier la biodiversité des passages The aim of the Mammif'air exploratory project is to develop an innovative method for studying the biodiversity of wildlife crossings using air DNA. In the face of the 6th extinction of biodiversity and the many questions that are emerging about the effectiveness of the solutions proposed, new tools are needed. Wildlife crossings have been developed to ensure ecological continuity in areas fragmented by transport infrastructures, but their effectiveness and the assessment of the species that benefit from them are not yet complete, and many grey areas remain. Thanks to molecular tools, it is now possible to detect the presence of an animal by means of its DNA, which it disseminates in the environment. The aim of this project is to combine this technology with tools for capturing airborne particles, which are currently used to characterise pollen. The resulting innovative method will make it possible to capture the particles left behind by the many species that frequent wildlife crossings, and thus to better assess their use, and ultimately their effectiveness. This knowledge will enable us to better advise linear infrastructure managers in the implementation of the ERC sequence (Avoid, Reduce Compensate), to better preserve biodiversity.
