Impacts of European solar energy infrastructure on biodiversity: integrating existing knowledge to enable Nature Positive management and financial investments
This project will address four objectives to advance the state-of-the-art in solar biodiversity across both ecological and policy perspectives: (1) integration and analysis of solar biodiversity datasets across Europe; (2) evaluation of the application of biodiversity-related financial disclosures and biodiversity credit schemes to solar farms; (3) development of a standardised biodiversity and ecosystem service monitoring protocol for solar farms; and (4) development of a framework for enhancing solar park biodiversity through evidence-informed decisions on location, design and management. The project will build a new academic and stakeholder network across Europe focussing on interactions between solar energy and the hosting ecosystem. The benefits of the work will include: (1) improved management of solar parks for biodiversity across Europe; (2) better understanding of the financial mechanisms by which biodiversity on solar parks can be enhanced; and (3) improved evidence of how solar parks can enhance the biodiversity value within solar parks and the surrounding ecosystems.
